Leadership transition: integrating new senior leaders with a long-tenured team
International diplomatic mission · Diplomatic and international organisations
- new senior expatriate leaders
- long-serving local staff
- longest staff tenure
The challenge
Three new senior expatriate leaders were joining a local team of nine, some with more than two decades' service. With no overt dysfunction, the mission acted early to prevent cultural friction, communication silos and leadership misalignment, and to protect the institutional memory held by its longest-serving staff. Differences in tenure and communication norms, and the need to maintain service delivery, shaped the work.
Our approach
All twelve staff completed the Everything DiSC® Workplace assessment, followed by one-to-one coaching on their profiles. A facilitated workshop mapped styles across the team and turned the insights into agreed rules of engagement, captured in a Group Culture Report and Team Charter. Everything DiSC® on Catalyst™ gave staff ongoing access to profiles and colleague comparisons, with success measures set for language adoption, integration within 30 days, fewer style clashes, retention and continuity.
The results
• Common language: a shared behavioural vocabulary for meetings and resolving disagreements • Faster leadership integration: new leaders quickly understood each colleague's preferences and contribution • Valued institutional memory: long-serving staff felt recognised, supporting retention of local knowledge • Operational continuity: the Team Charter served as a working social contract, with service levels maintained throughout
